Translucence Biosystems participated in and sponsored the 18th Annual LFD Workshop in Advanced Fluorescence Imaging and Dynamics, organized by the Laboratory for Fluorescence Dynamics (LFD) at UC Irvine. This workshop brought together graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and industry scientists interested in advancing fluorescence microscopy and imaging technologies.

CEO and Co-Founder Damian Wheeler, Ph.D., presented a lecture titled, “Light Sheet Imaging and AI-Powered Quantification” during the Deep Tissue Microscopy session. The lecture covered image acquisition, brain registration, AI-powered 3D analysis, and data visualization techniques for large datasets generated by tissue clearing and light sheet microscopy. Dr. Wheeler also discussed current technical challenges that researchers face when generating actionable 3D data from large terabyte-scale datasets. Attendees learned about advanced stitching techniques and novel registration methods to efficiently process terabyte-scale brain images, and streamline analysis across multiple samples.

Research Associate Eric Blaes also hosted live demonstrations on the ZEISS Z.1 Lightsheet Microscope, equipped with the Mesoscale Imaging System™. The Mesoscale Imaging System enhances the capabilities of the ZEISS Lightsheet Z.1 by enabling the imaging of larger biological samples with high refractive index (RI) solutions using both 5x and 2.5x objectives. Scientists can image an entire mouse brain at cellular resolution in under 25 minutes using the 2.5x objective, enabling rapid, high-resolution three-dimensional imaging of intact tissues.

We thank the event co-organizers, Dr. Michelle Digman, Dr. Francesco Palombo, and Dr. Adeela Syed.

Translucence Biosystems is a leader in next-generation 3D histology and AI-powered quantification for intact biological samples, providing tools that help researchers gain new insights into complex biological systems.

Intern Spotlight on Nathan Hyman: No tissue clearing experience? No problem

When Nathan Hyman joined Translucence Biosystems as an undergraduate intern at the University of Michigan, he had no prior laboratory experience. Yet within months, Hyman was generating publication-quality 3D anatomical data that would later be featured at the 2024 Society for Neuroscience meeting. The following article describes how Hyman leveraged iDISCO-based tissue clearing methods, light sheet imaging, and Al-powered whole-brain object segmentation, to generate regionalized data across hundreds of brain regions.
